Abriendo y cerrando los respectivos trabajos reflejados están “Time and Space” y “The Whole”.

The Making of The Whole

Anyone would think a “Making of” of any kind has a clear beginning-development-ending linear structure to its process, wouldn’t they? Well, this LIGHT album is anything but. In the past I’d heard about quantum time with no real understanding of what it meant. A conversation with Sara when we finally strongly connected on a soul level made me eventually get it… Or at least I want to believe I do get it now. My humble understanding of her explanation is that quantum basically means the opposite to linear, and us human beings on Earth pretty much live under the rules of linear time. Everything that we do, plan and organise is based on the twenty-four hours that make the existence of our days passing by. So, when I talk about the creation of this musical work being affected by quantum time it’s of course metaphorically speaking; a metaphor… But most appropriate all the same.

If I say the making of The Whole isn’t linear it’s because I can’t even tell when the whole thing began in the first place. One goes through life getting inspired and creating music, writing lyrics with neither having a rigid intention to make an album nor exactly knowing when the music will be finished and ready to go. The process ends up being truly organic and not compromised by, say, obsession with deadlines and such. It could even extend for several years. However, at some point the creator reaches an understanding of what must be there and what mustn’t until the definitive shape is finally presented with total clarity. In the case of The Whole, its essence resulted in being a mirror to The Miracle Of Life but inverted. (In between, The Engine Of The World makes this series of albums a cohesive trilogy.) The Miracle Of Life closes with the 20-minute epic suite of the same name whereas The Whole opens with “Guardians Of The Secret,” the only other LIGHT long epic (19:01). While all lyrics are written by me, the music is made of ideas by both myself and ONE, my brother and keyboardist in the band. In the case of these long suites, the majority of themes composed that gave them birth are his.

The mirroring isn’t limited to these tracks alone though. From top to bottom -and bottom to top- the albums make sense to each other through a perfect reflection. Both “Dreamland” and “Headlong Into The Abyss” clock at eight-and-a-half minutes and feature special guests, Derek Sherinian on keyboard solos on the former and Jeff Baron, aka: Bad Habbits, rapping a section in the middle of the latter. Same thing goes for “Ethereal Beauty” and “Cage and Wings,” the other two songs musically composed by ONE for each record. Saxophonist Alex Pedini, an Italian living in Japan, played two excellent soprano sax parts of his on “Ethereal Beauty” which are intertwined and elevate the music beautifully for its last movement. On “Cage and Wings,” Indian young violinist Spondon Mukherjee recorded an exquisite take of the melody I came up with and transcribed for him. He even EQ’ed his take himself with the right amount of compression and reverb, which I saw no need of doing anything else to it during the song’s mixing process.

“Out Of The Way” and “Treasure Hunt” are the albums’ instrumental tracks, heavy-hitting hard rockers with a melodic and progressive side to them at the same rate. “Let Go” and “Inner Experience” are what I’d call the radio friendly songs. The lyrics on track #2 of The Miracle Of Life deal with vices, addiction, procrastination, all of those unwanted traits of someone who’s going through that hell. “Inner Experience,” track #5 of The Whole, feels wiser by showing the maturity of a person who can now accept things for what they are and try to be at peace with life’s nature; a clear evolution from the state described in “Let Go.”

Opening and closing the respective mirrored records are “Time and Space” and “The Whole.” Both reflect upon what is more than what one would like it to be. Again, the theme of acceptance over wishful thinking (Deep inside what you want is what you must is the very first line on “Time and Space,” and “The Whole” has that full verse which goes, A wish to belong in an alternate timeline/Infatuation’s what it is/I’ll make the Here and Now all mine/Though hard to believe, really is bliss). Musically speaking, I love the fact they came out really proggy, each unique and not actually similar in their key and construction but linked through their complexity all the same.

Going back to the quantum/linear time approaches, let’s try to spot the chronological moments to make the story as tidy as possible. According to the dates of the .wav audio files on my music folder, all of the acoustic guitar tracks were the first thing to be laid down. This was on July 31st 2022. Then the electric guitars followed throughout the rest of that year and the beginning of 2023. However, a couple of overdubs were added years later, being the e-bow electric guitar track on “Treasure Hunt” and nylon-stringed classical guitar piece on “The Whole” those late recordings from January 27th 2024 and October 11th 2025 respectively... Though not the last ones. By the time we got to the mixing process for the definitive versions, ONE suggested me to replace a clean electric guitar melody on “Guardians of the Secret” with the nylon-stringed. That same night on August 13th 2026 I went downstairs and not only did that but also created harmonies for its main theme. All of this truly improved the beginning of the reprised first movement, and once that was done, the definitive mix for “Guardians” could be finally exported. As you can see, the process from top to bottom has been all but linear.

ONE laid down all keyboard tracks from December 2022 to October 2024. I sang all of the songs on September 22nd 2024 except “Headlong Into The Abyss” which was vocally recorded on October 4th of that same year, almost two weeks later. The month of February 2024 was spent composing the drum parts for the full album, sketches played with the drums keyboard patch to give guidance to Nicolas Jourdain, who was meant to be the drummer yet again for another LIGHT record. Sadly, communication was fully lost since he never replied to my last WhatsApp message sent in mid-June 2026 in which I asked when his drum recording sessions were going to begin. The voice message I sent was left hanging with those “Seen” two blue checks; utter silence. Leandro Galera, bassist of this LIGHT line-up responsible for both The Miracle Of Life and The Engine Of The World and close friends with Nicolas, acted identically: no reply at all to this day.

Engine had already been years delayed. The drum recording process for this album began perfectly fine with Nicolas composing parts with total freedom without preconceived ideas neither by me nor by ONE. The Miracle Of Life already had the drumming figured out by both before him becoming a member of LIGHT save for “Dreamland,” the only one without treatment until he got in charge of it one-hundred percent. Three tracks for The Engine Of The World were recorded by Nicolas in mid-2022 with no need from me to insist at all. And suddenly things came to a complete halt almost overnight. A year later, by mid-2023 after we’d given a concert, I saw myself forced to compose the drums for the four remaining songs to somehow push things forward, even though that was never my intention since I wanted to take LIGHT further into real band territory instead of keeping it solely a sort of project led by my brother and me. Plus, Nicolas is an excellent drummer in his own right, not just technically but also in terms of compositional creativity. These tracks were finally tracked on September 29th and November 25th of that year -two and two-, yet not out of his own willingness, to be frank, but really through me being strategic first (I suggested a drum recording session in which I’d be present by visiting Leandro’s house, the place where the drum kit was set up, to film clips for social media, otherwise things were going to keep on being postponed) and completely honest, wearing my heart on my sleeve secondly. The latter was manifested in the form of a WhatsApp text message sent to Nicolas on November 15th 2023:

Claudio:

Nico. I write the following to you in relation to our phone conversation two days ago.

LIGHT itself, as well as the experience of working on this new album with you and Lean -and Marian too obviously (Marian, aka: ONE)- is one of the things I value the most these days, it’s what’s utterly relevant that I can offer others, the world! Judging from the words shared by those who purchased
The Miracle Of Life, we’re a band that’s already leaving a substantial mark with what we recorded and released in 2019-2020, let alone how much the ones who saw as live in April were left in awe.

On my behalf, I make a huge effort that probably goes unnoticed by you and Lean. Said effort is having a lot of consideration for your time and various responsibilities, and I don’t have any issues with it being like this and LIGHT therefore progressing without haste… Though without pause either. The thing is that with The Engine of the World we got to a critical point of stagnation, it’s been delayed more than two years already (counting the last months of 2021 and all of 2022-2023. Needless to say, I don’t include 2020 for obvious reasons). And the truth is this constant delaying of it is deeply affecting my mood, that’s why I asked you to let’s have a phone call on Monday to ask you to please record what’s left of the album this same week. On September 29th “New Horizons” and “Wanderlust” were recorded. Once the session was over, you said “Hopeless Search For Hope” and “From One Race To The Next” were going to be finished by next week and thus your whole part of the matter would be done. However, another month and a half went by from that last Friday of September and those drum takes are yet to be made real. Plus, you have rehearsals with Yesstories on a regular basis and a gig on December you guys are looking forward to. The first thing that came to my mind was Engine will keep on being delayed to no end. This is what I’m talking about.

I see the fact of having a band together the way Neil (Peart) wrote for “Mission”: to live and experience something meaningful through what bonds us, which is music. Both you and Lean have talent, passion and more than enough skills to get on board with this project. I believe the Delgift-ONE-Galera-Jourdain combo counts with a level of chemistry which makes me think of that of Lee-Lifeson-Peart, Sting-Summers-Copeland, Rothery-Hogarth-Kelly-Trewavas-Mosley and others. We’ve got personality, we’re a creatively original band with a sound that stands out. I see there’s future for this LIGHT line-up: there’s material, chemistry between the four of us and individual capabilities to leave a mark with what we generate.

I greatly appreciate the musical relationship we’ve got, on a human level too. Beyond music there’s good vibes since 2017 when we started working together on those songs of mine as soloist. It’s an immense pleasure for me to keep the ties so music and friendship keep on growing. My intention with this message is to come out clear with total sincerity and see where we go from here.

Nicolas:

Hi, Clau! How are you? Well, first of all, thanks for being honest, I greatly appreciate it. I also feel the same way about what you said at the end of your message. I believe there’s good chemistry on a musical and human level, it’s something I like about LIGHT. It was felt live and during rehearsals for the show.

When it comes to recordings, I can only ask for forgiveness. I honestly made the best I could to not put it aside but it clearly didn’t work out. I’m not trying to excuse myself, just being honest too. There’s never been bad intentio or lack of interest but bad organisation on my behalf.

I like being a part of LIGHT. Like I once said, it’s a pleasure and honour for me to be made a part of the band.

No doubt the message hit him and let the full drumming be done for once and for all. Fortunately, when it was Leandro’s turn, he respected his own commitment to work on the bass and finish everything in about a month’s time, which allowed us to premiere The Engine Of The World on March 14th and 15th 2024 on both Bandcamp and YouTube. Since then, I call this album my “Everest” in the sense that I cannot see myself achieving anything bigger than that purpose marked by a ridiculously amount of patience when it comes to dealing with people. There was kind of a curse I wanted to lift off of my shoulders though: at least two consecutive albums had to have the same band line-up, something that had never been possible up to that point. The self-titled LIGHT debut had Francisco Carpintero on drums and Leandro Biera on bass. The Miracle Of Life was the first album with Nicolas Jourdain and Leandro Galera, so Engine had to be the album to get rid of the spell. I succeeded after all, it turned out to be a titanic task conquered and I can still feel the sense of relief and pride to this day. Of course, I didn’t want it to end there, as it’s crystal-clear on my WhatsApp message to Nicolas. I genuinely believed LIGHT as such was a real band capable of growing exponentially with each new record from then on. This is why I kept on being patient with both of them for The Whole, but now there was neither anxiety nor frustration left to make me feel stressed. This new phase was approached with pure stoicism.

I guess a part of me took for granted that the lifting of the curse wasn’t going to be limited to Engine but it’d widely open the gates for the light to shine non-stop on and on instead. My unconscious mind must’ve assumed the recording process for its follow-up would be way easier, with a nice flow instead of having its path hardened with so many obstacles again. However, the latter became the reality of it, and now LIGHT got to the same point Genesis did in 1978, only with a close numerical difference: … And then there were two.

Far from calling it quits, I picked up the phone and called Pablo Pucheta, a very good drummer I’d known through the fully instrumental Progressive Rock band from Buenos Aires called Volvox. He said to be available as a session player and agreed to learn the six numbers for The Whole in a much shorter period of time than I was expecting. I’d already made up my mind to tackle the composition and execution of the bass lines myself after entertaining the idea of inviting a bass player as well for a couple of days to finally let it go in the end. In two-three days these were done and made it into the guide tracks for Pablo to eventually record the drums at Planta Baja Studio in downtown Buenos Aires where I’d recorded all vocals for The Engine Of The World back in November 2020.

From early July to mid-August 2026 there were three drum recording sessions in which everything needed to have the album finished for once and for all was done. Pablo turned out to be reliable and efficient, just one take for each track generally and specific re-recordings of certain parts to get the best results for the overall music. Great drum tone coming out of his Pearl kit as well! Plus Germán, owner of Planta Baja, always does a great job on both technical and human levels, one just feels good spending a few hours there doing something so worth it and having a fulfilling shared experience; it’s always a pleasure to work with him. And last but not least, Pablo de Vita, a long-time guitar student of mine whom I co-wrote the “Spoken” instrumental piece from the One More Circle ‘Round The Sun solo album with, joined us for the third and last session as videographer. Three and a half minutes of “Headlong Into The Abyss” were chosen to make a split-screen video out of it. It was crucial to take advantage of the drum session to capture Pablo (Pucheta) in real time, then the other clips could be filmed anytime with Pablo (de Vita) bringing his camera home so me and ONE were captured playing our part too (Jeff Baron filmed his Rap part himself in Miami with his Smartphone and sent the clip to us so it’d also make it into the final video).

To wrap things up regarding what I used to feel it was the ideal LIGHT line-up, I want to be clear on one thing: What’s been created with Nicolas and Leandro cannot be taken away from me and I don’t get attached to negative emotions. Life made me learn not to. I can listen to any of the songs we worked on together and enjoy them as much as I’ve always done (and as time goes by, anything in my life that was meaningful in the past that became timeless only gets better year after year). Plus, I’ll always be forever grateful to Nicolas for having composed and played drums on “Spirit Wanderers,” the song that came out of my fingers first thing I strapped my guitar on the night Sara passed away. A separation between good and bad must always be made, the bad (not so much the fact they decided to part ways with Marian and me but the way they did, which was without even a word of goodbye and good luck after seven years of sharing a project with us) mustn’t taint the good and the good mustn’t let one forget the bad; a matter of always striking a balance and being true to the reality one has to deal with.

Speaking of Sara, she made it into The Whole from beyond. I’d already came up with the title of the album/song in 2021. There’s a picture I took of two vinyl records bought at a record store dated June 3rd of that year, Sting’s Live In Japan 1994 and a Bob Marley greatest hits, along with my copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves Of Grass and the rough sketch of the lyrics for the title track that I’d been writing on the train inspired by the book. Fast forward to late 2023, I came across a Facebook post of Sara celebrating the Day of the Dead shared on November 1st. Its title was Death wishes you to live. Everything gets transformed.

“Where are the beings that have embarked on a journey while we still remain on this Earth? Where did their laughter go, the music of their voices and their hugs? Everything that we love returns transformed. Everything that lives in Love is medicine.

“Remember Death wishes us to live, because we are human, because there is much for us to know, value and learn to love. Embrace each day of your life. Today, on the Day of those who made their journey to the Whole, may your tears be of happiness and infinite Love. For we are born there and towards Love we return.

“To all those who are gone, today I understand where you are going, and although I miss you with all of my being, I infinitely love you and thank each and every second by your side, so much so that I smile thinking of you… in the end.”

Sara and I had only exchanged messages on Facebook one night in mid-June 2020. It was only on January 12th 2024 when we were finally able -destined- to get in touch through WhatsApp and discover what was there waiting for us to share with each other. This post of her wasn’t directly related to LIGHT’s album and song as there’d never been a single public mention of this music yet. But it’s clear there’s always been a connection on a spiritual level all along. And one, thanks to more than one sign gotten since her flight on May 10th 2024, can be sure of the words she has for those who she loves and love her back: My journey is incredible.

More synchronicities keep dawning on me as I write... I clearly remember riding my bicycle towards Planta Baja in mid-July 2021, one month after writing the raw sheet of lyrics for “The Whole,” to be present at the recording session of my solo instrumental piece called “The March of the Raged” which Pablo got in charge of the drumming (this was our first collaboration, the only one until TW). Midway I got inspired to add a sample of Leaves Of Grass on the title track by downloading an audio that was going to be searched for on the web once I was back home later that evening, no matter how long it’d take for the song to be finished (quantum time all the way, you know). Who could’ve predicted this music and person were going to converge exactly five years later?

Now The Whole sees the light of day. May you enjoy this incredible journey with us, humble creators of one of the most noble things we’ve got while walking through life: music, the most powerful art form, to be shared with everyone.
