LIGHT (self-titled) - review for Amplified magazine #185, UK

 

I originally got in touch with this band as I remembered reviewing an album in the 90’s, but I really should have done my homework as while that band was from Holland, these guys are from Argentina. A fourpiece, they comprise Claudio Delgift (guitar/vocals), ONE (keyboards), Leandro Biera (bass) and Francisco Carpintero (drums) although I note that Ian Beabout (Colin Tench and others) provided flute on one track on this their debut, which came out at the beginning of 2019. 

If I didn’t know when this had been released, I would have thought that this was also from the 90’s (although the production is far superior) as this is solid neo-prog. The rhythm section keeps it tight, and this leaves the keyboards to provide what is often a back up melody while the guitar is very much hard rock based with lots of lead lines when the power chords are kept away.

Although they start with an instrumental track, the band do use vocals as well, and this is the one area which somewhat lets them down. It’s not that Claudio doesn’t have a reasonable voice, it’s just that I feel they may benefit from having a specialist singer. That being said they do have somewhat lengthy instrumental sections, which would explain why they are a quartet.

It certainly doesn’t sound as if it comes from South America, South London would have been my bet if I hadn’t known, as this is very reminiscent of what was on the circuit back in the day. They have already released the follow up, which I haven’t heard, and on that one they have managed to secure the services of none other than Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater/Sons Of Apollo/Joe Bonamassa) for one song so they are certainly starting to make a name for themselves. Definitely for fans of neo prog, this is a band to keep an eye on.

Originalmente me puse en contacto con esta banda porque recordaba haber revisado un álbum de ellos en los Noventa. Pero debería haber hecho mi tarea ya que esa banda era de Holanda, mientras que estos chicos son de Argentina. Un cuarteto compuesto por Claudio Delgift (guitarra/voz), ONE (teclados), Leandro Biera (bajo) y Francisco Carpintero (batería), aunque noto que Ian Beabout (Colin Tench y otros) proporcionó flauta en una pista en este debut que salió a principios de 2019. 

Si no hubiese sabido la fecha de publicación, hubiera pensado que esto también era de los años Noventa (aunque el nivel de producción es muy superior) ya que se trata de un Neo Prog sólido. La sección rítmica es precisa, lo que le permite a los teclados proporcionar lo que a menudo es una melodía de respaldo, mientras que la guitarra suena más bien Hard Rock con muchas líneas que lideran la música cuando los "power chords" no están presentes.

Aunque comienzan con una pista instrumental, la banda también cuenta con canciones cantadas, y esta es la única área que defrauda un poco. No es que Claudio no tenga una voz razonable, es solo que siento que pueden beneficiarse de tener un cantante especializado. Dicho esto, LIGHT tiene secciones instrumentales algo extendidas en sus piezas, lo que explicaría por qué son su cuarteto.

Ciertamente no suena como si viniera de Sudamérica, el sur de Londres hubiera sido mi apuesta si no lo hubiera sabido de antemano, ya que esto recuerda mucho a lo que había en el circuito en aquel entonces. Ya publicaron el segundo álbum, que no he escuchado, y en ese han logrado contar con los servicios de nada menos que Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater/Sons Of Apollo/Joe Bonamassa) en una canción, por lo que ciertamente están comenzando a hacerse un nombre por sí mismos. Definitivamente esta es una banda que todo fanático del Neo Prog debe tener en cuenta.
